Beware! Low stats does not equal lack of ability!

I play against players with fairly low and also extremely high ratings, and I have found many low rated players to be quite brilliant.  Yet, higher rated players automatically assume they won't get a good game from someone with a lower rating than themselves. That is very wrong thinking!

VULPES_VULPES

Do you know what sandbagging is?

Hawksteinman

No

Troll4ever22

Ratings are overrated.

trysts

Really the only thing about playing players that are 400 or 500 points lower than you is that they usually lose a piece for no reason. They kind of sabotage the game themselves:)

Elroch

On average, low rated players don't play very well. That's how they achieve low ratings.

Indeed how not very well they play on average is directly and precisely related to their ratings.

And it's the same for all of us.

Too right they are!  I have been quite blown away at the ability of some low rated chess players.  My stats are nothing to write home about either, yet I have thrashed much higher rated people than myself. It's a huge mistake to assume you won't get  beaten because you are playing someone with a lower rating than yourself.

Ellie47

Tell me what sandbagging is then, I am always willing to learn.

Sandbagging, is where you lose on purpose for deceitful reasons.

Rating has nothing to do with chess skills. Rating has something to do with results.

Precisely.

Elroch

One important point is that there are different ways to lose a game of chess. One is to play several moves that are not quite best. Another is to play one huge blunder. The latter can be the case for someone in fast chess despite their strength at longer time controls.

Iluvsmetuna

You could also fall asleep at the board. You could get shot during a game. You could forget the game is In progress. You could get kidnapped. The list goes on.

Ellie47

Please, let's not get morbid, we have to assume we will all come out of the game alive, otherwise, it would be too dangerous to start in the first place!

Iluvsmetuna

Nothing morbid about going to a better place, Ellie!

Now you're not another one of those strange evolutionists I hope! Now that would be morbid!

Ellie47

Someone suggested low rated players may use computers to get the best moves, mmmmm!  I read on the chess.com cheating site that cheating is very unusual in low rated players, it generally shows up in very high rated players!

It's not safe to assume anything.

Iluvsmetuna

Danger is fun! So assume all you want, just don't complain if your assumption is plonk.

Ellie47

Kleelof is it safe to assume your carefully brushed your main today? :)

Yes. I use a comb made from the bones of my opponents. Laughing

BTW - It is 'mane'.
