Yes, as with all comparisons of the value of pieces it depends on the position. 2 connected passed pawns on the 6th rank defeat a rook for example.

Ah from the other thread. He was a very clever man indeed, incredible really given his background. There was a good movie about his life, I forget the name of it. Some are just born with the gift.
