I once beat a club player by responding f5. It is probably a lousy move (d5 is a solid sensible try) but the move will annoy a f4 player.

Try f6 as a sort of French defence once removed.  It is bound to throw your opponent.

Are there any GMs that occasionally play 1. f4? I seem to recall going over old games where Emmanuel Lasker opened f4. Any top player since then?
