Blitz addiction support thread

I thought I'd start a thread for the people like me who have an addiction to blitz. Everyday I play at least 50 blitz games on lichess at the time control of 5 minutes per side and 8 seconds per move. Not only is it fun, but it also provides an escape from problems in my own life. So when I stop a blitz binge it not only ends the fun but is actually painful too because then I'm back in reality.

I'm making a resolution to not play anymore blitz games, because I feel like it's bad for my chess and my life. I plan to use this thread to update every 2 weeks if I've been able to go without blitz or not. To go 2 weeks without it would be a huge achievement for me.

Feel free to make your anti-blitz resolutions and updates here too.

If your addiction is playing blitz at Lichess, then it will do no good to post over here that you have or haven't played over there. Your addiction can't be very bad if you haven't even played 1 game of blitz here.

You should make your thread over there. Doing it here is like announcing that you're going to quit drinking at a bar that you don't go to.

We won't have any way of knowing if you are telling the truth.

If you want to start a chess temperance movement, do it over there.

Lichess http://en.lichess.org/ is an open source software site. There are no ads on it and the interface is simpler, bigger boards, to me it has a better graphical interface. It's more of a blitz site due to the interface, it's easier for people to play on their iPads and stuff. People like Kingscrusher play there. It is more of an international site though, and the forums aren't as active as here.

Hey I've gone two hours without playing blitz, I'm doing good!

Why quit? Obviously there are things detrimental to health family well being work and what not (I use commas too much and am trying not to now)

What is blitz hurting? Escapism is a real thing and we all need ways to get away from the pain or banality of life...

The only thing j can imagine it hurting is chess. But then still no reason to stop

Just play long games as well.

This whole thing seems silly

For me it's really bad as once I start playing I just won't be able to stop. I'll keep saying to myself at the end of each game, "ok just one more", then after that game it's "just one more" again, and it keeps being just one more until it's like 4am in the morning. I neglect my job, family and health because of this. Plus it hurting your chess is for me alone a reason to stop as improving at chess is a goal of mine I place some value on.

Why don't you play here? The ads and more complicated unattractive graphical interface will slow you down and make it more likely you can stop.Cool

I'm sympathetic to your cause.   Doesn't appear you are getting much helpful support here however.   Focus on the fact it hurts your OTB chess.   I dabbled with 5 minutes chess for a very short stretch of time and truly understand the compulsion to play just one more game, then just one more, then just one more, all the while mostly losing and intermittently having scorn heaped on me by people who must be the world's worst losers.   Some fool whose rating is as lowly as mine mocking how bad I am and what a loser I am.   What is with the speed chess crowd?  Does some idiot with a <1100 rating think his insults are anything more than amusing?    Best way to kick an addiction is to get completely away from it if possible.  Chances are, just the fact you intend to keep returning to a chess website dims your chances of success.  Best cure for me to shake off the occasional bouts of chess mania I develop is to lose.  The pain of losing is truly worse than the joy of winning.

Nothing someone says on the forum will help him stop if he really is going to stop he needs to take action posting on a chess forum doesn't help .  Best of luck dolphin .
