B+N Endgame

there is a somewhat more efficient way to complete the B+N checkmate. i illistrated it in this puzzle http://www.chess.com/forum/view/more-puzzles/kbn-vs-k
the initial position is the position you should try to reach, and from there, mate is less than 20 moves away, although it can be slightly more difficult to execute do to one little part of the pattern that is difficult to find because it seems counter productive though it really isn't.

well, in your position the king is already on the side. it is much easier to follow the same plan all the way than to switch plans after reaching a current position.

all you have to do to get the king to the position in my thread is to push him to the opposite color corner from the checkmating corner, making sure ur king ends up in the correct position. it really isn't "switching plans", but it's hard to explain without showing you.
The reason to learn this ending is not so you can execute it when it happens. The reason is because it aids in your ability to see mating patterns. Anyone can see how two rooks deliver mate. It's not natural to see how B+N work together, so knowing this mate is important for when you are attacking the king.
