Bobby Fischer depicted in Forrest Gump (1994)

You know, I saw Forrest Gump in the theatres in 1994 and have seen it many times since then.  In case you don't know what Forrest Gump is, it's Tom Hanks playing this wicked retarded guy that coasts through life and meets lots of famous people.  There is a plethora of Hanks being digitally inserted in historical film clips to give the impression he has met famous people or participated in famous events.

Now, I'm watching it on AMC right now, and I swear he meets Bobby Fischer in one scene and briefly compares chess to his own favorite sport of ping-pong.  This scene takes place in between the "Dick Cavett Show" scene and where Gump goes to NYC to meet up with Lieutenant Dan, thus placing it around 1972 to 1974.

I can't believe I never noticed that scene.  Wow.

Pfffft....yeah right.

I don't remember it either & I'm sure I watched it at least 3 times, maybe 4. Is there a link that you can find?

What do you mean "link"?  Forrest Gump is a film from 1994 starring Tom Hanks and directed by Robert Zemeckis.  I don't understand what more links you need.  Please explain.

9thEagle

He wants a youtube clip.

johnmusacha

I don't know anything about that stuff.  Aren't those copyright violations?

9thEagle

Well, sure. Which doesn't mean it's not on youtube (I have no idea if it is or not). I'm just saying that's what he wanted by a link.

IDK, he can find it himself if he's computer-internet savvy.  The only "link" I can recommend is watching the actual film.

In the novel Forrest has a brief career as a chess champion!

I don't know, perhaps you saw a censored version or a foreign bootleg or something.

Often times movies shown on TV will have added scenes not shown in theaters or on the original DVD release. I recall watching "The Abyss" on TV one time and was shocked to see an entire story line added in. Where the Aliens used waves to attack us and at the last minute the waves were held in place and subsided. None of that was in the original theater release or video tape. Acutally filled in some gaps from the original storyline.....

I have to assume some extra footage was added in after the fact in the broadcast you were watching, because I've seen Forest Gump more times than I can count and I've never seen him meet Fischer.

the only thing close i can find on this topic is bobby fischer on the TV screen at 0:52 in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvJ4wh1kwR8

Perhaps the footage of Bobby Fischer was added to the film after Fischer's death in 2008.  Under SAG rules, the filmmakers would have to get Fischer's permission to use his likeness in a movie, even if it just from old clips.  This rule only applies while the "actor" is alive, so, that may explain why there is a scene of Forrest Gump meeting Bobby Fischer in the film.

It was right after the "Dick Cavett Show" scene in Forrest Gump.

There's no way Bobby would allow for his likeness to be used in a movie, dead or alive.
