Bobby Fischer on Women in Chess

If Fischer was a nazi how do you explain all the jewish friends he had in his life ? Its like those who say the same of Alekhine, yet he married an American jewish woman.... HOGWASH !
It's obviously. Fischer spoke about this issue in his interviews, Alekhin wrote in
his articles .

I say you need to.
Well that's wrong, but whatever floats your boat I guess.
"Violence on TV made me do it."
"My upbringing made me the monster I am."
"Video games are the culprit."
You risk legitimizing all of these defenses.
Personal accountability means that your past is irrelevant. People must be responsible for the choices they make regardless of what their past is.

I don't think that you actually understand my stance, or else you would not have said this.

That has absolutely nothing to do with my point about Bobby Fischer. Do you honestly think that you can judge everyones character on the same scale? How about people with severe mental illnesses? Fischer didn't choose to be the way he was anymore than you did.

Once again you just made the argument that people doesn't chose their actions and opinions, you just said the exact same thing that those quotes do.

I figure it is quite possible that Fischer developed some form of mental illness late in life. If not that, he obviously had some social development issues from his rather odd life.
I prefer to focus on Fischer the chess player and largely ignore Fisher the sometimes offensive person.

It has everything to do with your point. The suggestion you made was that personal accountability be suspended based on Fischer's sacrifice -- not a mental illness -- his upbringing.

It was a stupid question in the first place.
Because he THINKS woman can't compete with men in chess, he's a woman hater? What a dumb question to ask.
Frankly, they couldn't in his day and not too much has changed as far as that goes at the top level.
Just a moronic interviewer phishing for headlines from a kid.
How old was Fischer in that video? I'm 40 so if he's under 24 he's a still a kid in my book.
He didn't just say they can't play chess. Watch the whole video.

Once again you just made the argument that people doesn't chose their actions and opinions, you just said the exact same thing that those quotes do.
Well to be fair the quote about upbringing is totally valid.
And I suppose if somebody sacrificed their entire life to play video games (not somebody who just plays a lot of video games because he/she has nothing else to do) you could afford them some leniency too.
Violence on TV, etc, is just silly and has nothing to do with this.

It has everything to do with your point. The suggestion you made was that personal accountability be suspended based on Fischer's sacrifice -- not a mental illness -- his upbringing.
Fischer was obviously not quite correct when it comes to his mental health.

Well you are free to think that if you want, but while everyone else was having a normal life, going on dates, attending college, etc... Bobby Fischer was studying and playing chess.
If you have not made sacrifices like that in your own life then you simply don't have the right to judge someones character.
This doesn't look like an assessment of mental health, and it's certainly not an excuse for subsequent actions.

It's not an excuse.
Bobby Fischer is born, and for whatever reason, he becomes obsessed with chess. He sacrifices a normal life for his chess ability and consequently becomes a little bit unhinged.
I don't think that Fischer had a diagnosed mental illness, but he was definitely not quite right.
I don't think you should judge someone without at least understanding them.

It's certainly arguable that Fischer had some kind of mental illness. In any case his early opinions of women didn't come from a place of wisdom. At best he was emotionally immature then as well as uninformed about the world of normal relationships.

It was a stupid question in the first place.

I watched the whole video. Perhaps you should review.
He was asked if he was a woman hater BEFORE he said the other things, not pertaining to competing in chess.
Like I said, a moron phishing for sound bites.
And it was 1963!!!!!!!........
A lot more people would have had those sort of views. Different generation.....
But women still cant cook! ;)
You can't look at his character without looking at him as a whole.
