What are some of the better opening books that pertain to the French or semi-Slav..

Just looked at your profile. You say you've just started to play.

Then you must take into account that J. Watson's book is of quite a high level. 

 You might find some interest in one of these titles instead :

 - Starting out, the French (Everyman) by Byron Jacobs, which is more of a French primer

- Winning with the French, by Wolfgang Uhlmann, which is a collection of French defence games, played by a lifelong practitionner - it has very good instructive value

- Mastering the French by McDonald and Harley, which explains ideas and pawn structures, though I wouldn't start with this one
