I found this:

while trying to answer the question: "If Alekhine had played Botvinik in 1946 who would have won?"

Don't read it. It's horse manure. Instead please answer my question and give some BRIEF reasons.

Thanks.

arguments for both but botvinnik has beaten Alekhine before in 1938 and they both probably weren't in prime. This is the game

Botvinnik probably improved since this game and Alekhine probably was exiting his prime. It's unclear who would've won but i'd put my money on Botvinnik.

Alekhine never gave his most at these "qualifiers". He has lost to hugely inferior players in these matches. Asking him to quit the vodka and concentrate is like asking Fischer to not be insane! But I recon if he could stay sober he would have won. at least the first year they locked horns.....

Alexander Alekhine would've been in his 50s (in age) and botvinnik in his 30s. Botvinnik would certainly have more brain power. That isn't enough to win the championship though. I'm not convinced (although a possibility) that Alekhine was drunk during the game i posted as in tournment he did ok. 7/14.   In that game Alekhine didn't play horribly either.

Let's not forget that Botvinnik was playing really well in the surrounding years. he won the 1941 USSR absolute tournament, 1943 Sverdlovsk tournament, 1944 USSR championship, 1945 USSR championship, 1946 Groningen tournament, 1947 Moscow tournament and the 1948 World championship tournament.

not saying he was drunk in THAT game. Just he had a propensity to indulge.... but that is not too important. I think you are right about the age thing, though..... he would struggle against a disciplined youngster....

I wouldn't be surprised if Alekhine won. Chess is a funny old game. But Botvinnik is the favorite.
