I don't have a PHd. But I can tell you that your brain doesn't have a maximum limit really. (Unless you are Kelly Bundy).

No doubt studying and practicing chess CAN improve your ability to take in and process new information. It probably can help with memory since you are constantly recalling opening lines and positions.

When it comes to the brain, there really is no down-side to studying chess.

I'm not sure about that. For instance, yesterday I learnt the temperature at which sugar caramelizes, but now I can't remember who had the 60's hit Lily the Pink....
