i thought i'd cut out most of the silly mistakes but i was wrong i reach a respectable rating of 1650 then i get BRAIN FREEZE and start throwing games away and giving my QUEEN away willy nilly .Does anybody know a remedy (maybe leeches) or an ointment i can use .

p.s. please don't line up to challenge me for easy points

Maybe playing less and in so doing enjoying (respecting) your games more.
If a game is not special to you, it's easily messed up

is less more?

At least to me it worked out that way, I've had several blocks/freezes as well.
Another reason could be it seems like you are playing worse, but you are only noticing more. Getting better can be frustrating

I have the same problem. I find it interesting that when I'm playing that badly and I have a go at the tactics trainer I'm lucky if I can spot a mate in one :( but if I keep doing problems my brain eventualy kicks back into gear. Give it a go and see if it helps.

that is one thing i have stopped using GOOD IDEA :-)

We all get brain freeze now and again. I have had it happen when I was ahead in the game and suddenly found myself having a garage sale, giving away my Queen and Rook. Yes, don't challange me for an easy time, I mean game!

Sometimes I come upon a position where I look at it and simply don't know what to do! It is a hard thing to get through, and in the past I have gotten to the point where I would just sort of give up and pick a move.

This is not what you should do! What I have learned to do in that situation is to make sure I study the position as well as I can. I try to notice as many things about the position from both sides of the board such as weaknesses, imbalances, etc. From there I can quickly think about a few posible moves and calculate the best I can. From there I can compare the resulting positions. Often times by this point if I am still not liking my candidate moves, I have often found other posibilities.

In any case it is important to think about what your opponent will do if you make the move before you make it ... no hanging pieces ... thats frustrating!

Hope that helps, best of luck :-)

I fear it may be due to middle age and external distractions. If anyone finds a sure way to combat this, let me know.

Actually, I just need to take the time to completely evaluate a situation before making a move, but I get caught up in the heat of the moment, and *poof* one of my pieces is gone.
