Browser discrimination on chess.com

Maybe y'all are right,  I'll think about it.  The thing is, I can beat almost half of the people on here while driving a Model A.  What would you do if I suddenly showed up in a T-Bird?

MGleason

Your win percentage and rating wouldn't be affected, but your overall experience of the internet might be better.  You might see pages loading faster, you would be less vulnerable to malware, etc.

sorry to interrupt but look:

I recently stumbled across a page on the Government National Mortgage Associate page that suggested it would be better viewed with Internet Explorer 5.5 or later or with Netscape Navigator.  There was a link to install Netscape Navigator - and it was dead.  grin.png

I want to thank every single one of you kind folks for your answers to my question.  I am reconsidering my browser as I type this, but IE has been the default since time immemorial.  I will monitor its performance like a hawk and cut loose the moment it begins to degrade. I will now surrender this thread to other users who want to bitch about their browsers.

MGleason

I'd recommend giving one of the other browsers a shot.  You might find they're a lot faster.

There's also a lot of extensions for the other browsers that can add features such as adblocking, blocking trackers, productivity tools, and many other features.

Hey, they didn't ask you to upgrade your account, they just asked you to consider it.

Can you consider it for half a second?  It won't hurt, really!

MGleason

Thanks, that's all that was asked.

I hear you guys, and I appreciate your input.  I'm not a power user in the same sense as some of you; I don't mine Bitcoin and I don't play those shooters where I have to draw down on someone in Antarctica before they draw down on me.  On the other hand, I have originated and sold a URL for $150,000, and I have used the internet to lead a coup against the management of a two-county electric utility cooperative, so I'm not a total derp.  In every case, IE was sufficient for what I wanted to do.  Tell me just one thing I would be interested in doing that I would need Chrome or Firefox to do.

Think of IE as an old car - you love your old car, you know its limitations, but because of the car's age you wouldn't dare take it on a major highway during rush hour. Same thing with IE, which is slowly fading into the history books. Chrome is my recommendation, followed by Edge (once you change a few settings), then any of the others such as Firefox or Opera.

I've read your browser suggestions and maybe you're right and maybe you're wrong.  Maybe Microsoft has fallen by the wayside to second-class status and maybe it hasn't.  I'm an old guy but not a Neanderthal, the Wintel/IE platform is what I'm accustomed to.  Every single game I have lost on this website was on account of my own stupid moves or running out of time, not on account of my prehistoric configuration.

Microsoft is no longer developing new features for IE, and is only providing updates for security holes and bug fixes.  They've switched to Microsoft Edge as their new browser: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/microsoft-edge.  It does share some technology with IE, so if you're still used to IE, you might find it's close to what you're used to.

However, the other major browsers, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera, are well worth a look.

Whatever you do, though, I would recommend switching away from IE.  An increasing number of sites will be pulling the plug on it in the near future.

No, for any operator system which is not Windows 10, they stick with IE

Considered and rejected.

Time to sell all your online information. Chess.com has to eat.

Internet Explorer 11 which is the browser for Windows 8 is hopeless on this site.
You either have to go Edge under Windows 10 or
say Opera if like me you have windows 8 and various must have legacy things.

Check your settings: https://www.chess.com/settings/notifications.  It's the one "automatically track any content I comment on".

Minor digression - I work for a major bank and when I first started last year the IT team required everyone to use IE when on the company computers. It was awful; IE was slow and a bunch of settings had to be changed simply to allow one of the primary web applications we use to load. It wasn't just a personal gripe, even the supervisors and managers didn't understand why we had to use it. Finally we were given permission to use Chrome and things run much more smoothly. I found it hard to believe that this bank required IE for so long, but I've gotten the impression now that many places do the same thing with (older) technology. Whether it is costs or the comfort of what is known, change can be hard.

Sometimes they require old browsers because they have legacy systems that were designed for IE and its quirks and so only run on IE.

Other times it's because they haven't actually bothered testing the newer browsers to see if their systems function properly.
