Hard to tell anything about browsers that are not supported any more. Chess.com might keep removing the code for old browsers, who knows

First step is to clear you browser cache.

If that doesn't help, it's very possible that some components were recently updated, and now rely on features your browser doesn't support.

If that were the case why would the site's programmers specifically withdraw support for items that they are upgrading and deliberately exclude Windows 7 and Opera users?

The site won't support old browsers forever. There are certain feature sets they want to support and set a minimum browser version for code to support to continue updates and improvements.
