There are a lot of higher level players that have vastly different opinions of how to improve. So the real question is; who are you going to believe? Some players will tell you to work tactics till you're ready to cry. Others will say, dont bother learning openings. The last thing you want to do is spend time following a course thats not going to help much. Whatever you do, keep an open mind and always be looking for better information.

i'am new to chess and jst started working my way through my first chess-book (yeaaa!) by dan heisman: A Guide to Chess Improvement: The Best Of Novice Nook. it answers those very same questions in the first chapter, so i thot i would mention it? most of the articles are probally archieved on the internet sumplace but it's nice (4 ME anyways) to have everything in a book that i can throw in my backpack. he talks about chess coaches too... when and why and all like that. good luck:)

I feel like chess is very hard to teach, yet when I play with someone rated say under 800 I feel like they are missing basics that I could show them. I realize then that probably if I play someone rated 1500+ they must feel like I miss stupid basics. (I am about 1100) with that hypothesis, id like to know if anyone here could coach me, and perhaps make me take a +200 rating leap, or is that +200 going to come with simply tons of practice.
