Can I become an I.M. in 12 years?

Then you'll definitely never be an IM.

First of all, becoming a titled player has never been a goal of mine. Chess (at least for now) is simply a hobby for me; it is a hobby I invest a lot of time into, but still just a hobby. I have no dreams of becoming an IM.

As for writing quality responses, I'd say they help if anything. Does writing useful posts for others take a lot of my time which I could be playing chess or studying chess. Yes. Of course, teaching others chess concepts and explaining things also helps cement them myself; if you want to learn something well, consider teaching it to others. It is impossible to teach effectively if you don't know the material well yourself, so helping others in the chess.com forum threads might even benefit my chess understanding in some ways. That isn't why I'm in the forums as much as I am, but it is a nice benefit. Why shouldn't I help others? Kindness costs nothing.

Play a few games each day(preferably rapid)although not too much that you get burnt out. Do puzzles, they help your calculation skills a lot. Also, learn maybe one opening for white and one for black. Work on simple endgame checkmates like k+r vs k or k+p vs k. That’s about it to improve at your level.

Yea, but the conversation wasn't about *you* becoming an IM, it was about the original poster wanting to become an IM... And I'm saying to *him*, if *he* wants to be an IM, then don't waste so much time on forums or writing books for people to read on here.

"People don't fail because they don't know how hard to work....they fail because they're not willing to work hard enough." ++ Many fail because they are too lazy: they buy books and then do not study them. Many fail because they do the wrong thing.

Just do your daily puzzle rush and you will be IM in no time. ;-)

I'm 17 years old now and want to become an International Master one day. Is it reasonable to try to get to this level before 30 years old?

That sounds like a perfectly realistic goal.
