I have played chess on and off for years but am now getting really serious about it. How long is it until I become GM? I'm thinking two weeks ought to do it but my friend said no way. I think he's just jealous of my extreme talent, which has yet to show itself in any way, but it exists I swear.

Seriously though, look at my intense training schedule:

Monday: Play chess

Tuesday: Play chess

Wednesday: Bag off

Thursday: Kick myself for not playing on Wednesday

Friday: Drink and play chess

Saturday: Drink

Sunday: Rest day

With that much practice getting to super GM status in a month should be doable. You guys should totally agree with me.

Somebody tell Magnus he better start worrying.

Warning: this is funny, you should not take it seriously or get worked up about it in any way. Unless you're one of those people, in which case you should stop being one of those people.

Well, first Judit Polgar was trained a lot for a long time and reached a Grandmaster in a few years.

Second, you should not say you can do it because mathematically it is impossible. Garry Kasaparov took a few years to become a GM. Also, the youngest GM,(He was 10 when he reached the title) started playing at 2 years old. If you can do that, you will be better than anyone.

Third, not to let you down, it is very unlikely for you to do that. Anyway, you porbably don't have the hidden talent since it would be 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001% chance.

No.

First of all, you have to play 3 GM norm tourneys, achieve like a 2500 FIDE, and all in 29 days? More like 2.9 years.

Yes, if you practice for 9,999 hours in those 29 days. You are very talented, so, you can skip one of the 10,000 hours.

That is mathematically impossible. If you spend 29 days 24/7 playing chess you will only play 696 hours.

Cool

It's the same as asking a question 'Can my dog win the Puppy Bowl in 2 hours?'

of course; Gary Cooper, right? great movie

FYI, that is less than the chance then finding all the people in the world and picking it from a hat.

OK.  Was there a point to that?  Just wondering.

Why did the whole town get hostile toward the hero?

Don't forget it is a parody thread.

Also, obviously not because it's very short of the 10,000 hour rule as another mentioned.

The town deserted GC because the Millers were coming.

RonaldJosephCote

You've got the dialogue all wrong with Gary Cooper.  (banker)-- Sheriff, are the Millers coming?"        "Yep"     Shouldn't we leave?   "Nope"

Your face looks like the face of a bloke with potential and cats are lucky.

I've got a good feeling about this.

Yes, I'll give you a chance, but on one condition, that the 29 days are not consecutive.
