Can intelligent person suck at chess, forever?

What I have discovered over the years, chess is enjoyable when you play people within your strength range, slightly above, below or even! It is when you are in the game with chances to win, but when you are being blown away by a heavy weight, there is no fun in that. But then you may say, how do I improve, that is where a study method comes in.  You study, then play your equal, then you will see if you are improving?

I do believe that one of the great secrets to happiness is to find a partner who is your equal and who challenges you.

I suppose the same principle is true in chess.

GhostNight

That is a very good point Smyslovfan, so that must be why my wife and I get along so well over the many years, but then again I look at life as give and take, and try to stay healthy inside and out!

A partner who's your equal and who challenges you?  I couldn't agree more!  -- I'm assuming you're considering it a "given" that the partner is also "a good sport." Wink

Chess has absolutely nothing to do with marriage. It is a very poor analogy. As GhostNight said, there is much "give and take" in a good, lasting marriage. In chess? Take...take...take!

GhostNight

Ok Harvy, look at it this way, have you never in a game of chess give, only to take back a bigger prize, ah ha, I got you there!  Back to your drawing board!Cool  Oh and chess is life being played out ? I think?

I love it when guys with a 95 IQ complain: "I have a 160 IQ but suck at chess." If they lie about the first, why not also the second?

Ummmm....

Harvey_Wallbanger

Ummmm? They should not lie about either. They don't really have a 160 IQ. They should say: "I'm not too bright and I suck at chess".

The title of this forum or thread is "Can Intelligent Person Suck At Chess Forever?"  I would say if you want to play chess play chess. Chess is an easy game to play but it is a hard game to play well. In regards to intelligence, intelligence is hard to define. In regards to sucking at chess sucking in this context is a vague term. In regards to forever no one can suck at chess forever because each of us eventually dies. Have fun with chess. Take chess seriously if you want to but do not take it over seriously. Do you understand what I mean?

GhostNight

better, thats funny because I am tall my wife is short, means I clean the high places she cleans the low areas. Money, never had enough but once we paid our house off then things got better that is priority # 1, get rid of your mortgage!  now back to suck at chess syndromeCry

Harvey_Wallbanger

Why pay off your mortgage when you can buy puts and short the stock market?

Elroch

All humans suck at chess, GhostNight. It's just a matter of degree. And you ain't bad.

itchynscratchy

Do hedgehogs suck at chess ? Never seen one play a bad move.

Elroch

Can't be bad, they have an opening named after them.

Since I registered here (I have deleted previous accounts) I have steadily but slowly improved. That is also due to my experience in other chess clubs which intimidate me less than chess.com. Does it mean that in 10 years I'll be a Master? Definitely not, also because I am not young and I suffer of an illness (CFS) which keeps deteriorating my mental abilities.

If a chess player blunders in a forest, and no one's there to see it, did she really blunder?

thegreat_patzer

Not a bad bump "motherinlaw"

Blunders not punished is in fact perhaps one of the very many reasons why an intelligent person "may" in fact, suck at chess forever!

.... I find its illogical to assume that just because you are persistant or study, that you 'must' improve.  you will improve if you can learn to get over major weaknesses-- so will I, so will Magnus for that matter!

that is why the first priority must be to really Love to play chess.

DrSpudnik

Who plays chess in a forest?

Elroch

A hedgehog?
