Giri missed Qa3 to hold a winning advantage. However, I think this is the first game in the tournament for Carlsen where he actually was technically losing.

can  u  explain buddy y only qa3?

hmmmm y isnt he playing in tornaments now?i guess serius preparation is going on for world championship

You're all asking the wrong question: It's not about Magnus reaching 3000+ ELO, it's about Borislav Ivanov reaching 3000+. As he is clearly the strongest player in the world atm. Alegedly having beaten Houdini and Rybka 10-0 straight ;-)

(PS: This post may contain sarcasm and/or irony.)

Anyone (even Magnus) has the right to oversee something, doesn't he?

Some months ago, he overlooked an easy win in a technical endgame against Caruana, and eventually he went on losing this game. But this does not say much, does it?

Sorry I missed this question. 28.Qa3 (or even 29.Qa3 since magnus initially missed it) prevents the Bxb3 sacrifice from working. For example after 29.Qa3 Bxb3 30.axb3 Rxb3 31.Qa2, black is just down a piece and lost.

tnx buddy

No, very probably he will not.  Let's not belittle what he has already achieved by putting up some number that makes little or no sense.

If he passes 2900 it will be a great historical happening.  He is already either the best or 2nd best player of all time.

Elubas

Yes, it's like saying he'll never be rated 1 million. Too bad?

no he won't pass the 3000 elo barrier hes good but not that good

Interesting quote, anacapa. I wonder if a modern chess player would interpret that as a recommendation not to have a chess style (preferences).

That is not to say we've seen the last of broken records from Magnus. He has topped Kasparovs highest rating, at the tender age of 22. He is going to be on top for a long time.

Fate and life can be kind or cruel nothing is ever certain a meteor or giant asteroid from outerspace could fall on top of the norweigan golden boy unexpectedly and dash all his hopes of winning the world title anything can happen.

buddy i agree but dont u think he relies on end games heavily??

Someone who can calculate FIDE ratings please tell me if Magnus would be plus or minus rating points for this tournament so far if his current rating was 2975.

[edit]  I did not read the last part... "if his current rating was 2975."  The calculation I did with this: http://ratings.fide.com/calculator_rtd.phtml was for his current rating.  In that case he did gain a little over a point... but NOT if his rating were 2975.

ChrisWainscott

I'd say it's potentially a slightly false read Estragon.  My point was that at this point Carlsen has to score 2-3 just to make a one point gain.  The higher his rating the more he'll have to score just to tread water.

Can he break 2900?  I would assume so.  3000?  Highly doubtful.

cyberdynsystemsmodel

another win for karlsen...the golden boy is on a roll

Rasparovov

Actually.
It doesn't matter if he's gotta score more wins than draws without losing. He will be granted whatever his rating is, whether it's over 2900 or 3000 or below.
And by the looks of it, 2900 should be scared.

cyberdynsystemsmodel

hmm close shave for carlsen somehow he managed to escape...........hez a genius.........
