Can you force a win with only a queen vs a defending knight?  How do you play this endgame?

It is harder to do than QvB but yes, this can be forced.  Like Salami said, check out Youtube.

all you have to do is trade the pieces off and you can force to get q + k vs k + n

 

a queen is better than knight unless the knight is handsome and the queen is ugly
