Can the chess set effect your play?

There are many different chess sets out there with some being very cheap and poorly made. Can these effect your play? I feel like more than once that the design has effected me mainly the size and shape. Is it just all in my head?

I once played with a set (someone elses) where the pieces were so similar in shape and color I had difficulty identifying which piece was which. I did not enjoy the game. I don't remember whether I won or lost but I remember my game was not up to par as I was concentrating so much on identifying the pieces. So, yes, The set can effect your play.

If blitz or bullet chess is being played, weighted pieces are nice. It's easy to knock over a piece unintentionally when moving quickly. Pieces that are weighted in bottom will allow more wobble instead of being knocked over.
