Can you get good at chess without a coach?

My schedule is very very tight at this point...I had a coach I worked with who got me to 1400 but we had very incompatible schedules.

If I read a lot of books and play and analyze a lot, can I get to 1700-2000 level?

So 1400 isn't good at chess?  I find your remarks hurtful, sir.

Too bad you're nowhere near a 1400. Your "correspondence chess" rating on Chess.com is nowhere near comparable to an actual USCF or FIDE OTB rating. Not in the least.

If you're a 1400 in correspondence chess on this site, and a 646 in blitz you're probably rocking it at about a 900 USCF rating.

Then the OP's callous remark is even more hurtful.

Here's an interview with the late GM Walter Browne. He simply became obsessed with chess in high school, studied it constantly, played a ton of games and kept it up. He doesn't mention ever having a coach.

No one I knew ever had a coach, but as a group we did well. Two experts, three masters and me. I stopped playing at 22, while they forged on ahead.

Depends. Do you learn maths by listening or doing?
