Can you see the pieces better on a board or computer screen?

I have found that I tend to have trouble when I play on the board, and even occasionally hang a piece.  I can see the pieces much better on a flat overhead view on the computer screen.  Does anyone else have the same issue?

I do now! I only play online now so I find that my vision on a "real" 3D board is not as acute as it used to be. I will have to go play some proper chess in a proper club again.

Yes! I have exactly the same problem.  I play chess on the computer everyday but its rare that i get to play face to face.  Also i hate chess sets where the identity of the pieces are ambigious, it makes playing so much harder.

I see better over the board.  I play online more often, but my best play happens when I can see all the pieces in 3D.

Pieces are better seen in computer screen. But in face to face chess I experienced a strong feelings many times as the pieces have their own lives .

I prefer to play a face to face game than one online but I find it much easier to see the pieces on the computer.

I have the same issue.  It's been so long since I've played OTB (over the board).  One of my resolutions is to begin palying at one of the local chess clubs and in some tournaments.  Hopefully with practice my 'board vision' will come back.

For me, all of the chess I play on the computer I see as training for OTB. I make sure to fit in as many OTB games as I can during a week, so I never become too accustomed to the computer view. I'm certain that my rating in OTB games is at least 200 "points" higher than I play online, because for one - I'm playing tons of games at a given time all of which are stretched out over mutiple days and I can't "see" the other person - whereas OTB play is a single game played during a single setting and involves psychological data. I'd urge all of you who are becoming really accustomed to the computer view to deliberately try to break that habit a bit, mix it up.

It all depends on practice... I used to be much better on real boards... But since chess.com, I'm worse... :*(... It should be solved by playing more real chess

Chess board... I need the three dimantions, and the 3D in computers is no enough for me

The thing is that you have a full view of the board when you play in the computer, that is the thing, you are just so used to this way of playing that you need to get used to the old times. just that.

I got a small magnetic Chess/Checkers set for christmas and my Dad has trouble seeing the pieces, so I can beat him lol. He's colorblind with certain shades of colors so i think instead of this computer chess, he'd stick to normal chess boards and pieces.

You gotta mix it up.  I'm a newbie here, but I've been playing online here and there for a couple of years, and I've worked hard to maintain a weekly schedule of at least one or two OTB games with a friend.  Also, when you're playing online in real time (just one game, preferably Wink ) or playing against an engine, I find it worth the effort to set up my pieces and play with wood to keep the eyes sharp.

I set up a real board and study that when playing on line. I recognize more that way.

A real board and pieces are the only way I have ever played until now.

Yeah, I actually enjoy playing Chess more on a board. Online Chess, not so much. But I play it anyway since not a lot of people I know play Chess.

hi,  I play better over the table as I can feel the piece I am moving. This sense of touch gives me a better "feel" of the position I am analysing in my mind!~ Maybe it's psychological, but a lot of chess-play is psychology.

I've played better on a real board before, but now I prefer Online chess! Only few people like playing this game... and if it's your hobby the problem of seeking opponents disappears... and your playing Online is getting better :))))))
