Can you see the pieces better on a board or computer screen?

On certain occasions (playing online), when I’m in a dilemma of “what do I do next,” I make the best of both worlds by using the board & pieces, instead of staring endlessly into the glare of my CRT.

I prefer a real board.

I have the same problem.

I seem to be about the same on both since i have played in OTB tournaments and against chess computers too so it balances out about even as far as skill is concern. But i do like over the board better ,just like the feel of playing somone u can see and the atmosphere is fantastic in tournaments too if u dont mind the cost to play .....Cool

I like playing on 2-d computer screen because I see the lines more easily. The diagonals of the bishops, the horizontal and vertikal lines of the rooks etc.

Oh please, any real player uses a board with pieces.

These days I'm happy either way but after a long break (17 years) from any kind of chess I started playing on line.  Since I'd read my share of chess books the 2D view wasn't a problem.

After a few years of Internet chess I joined a club.  I certainly made some blunders at first due to the no-longer-familiar view of the board but it didn't take too long to get used to it again.

But I made a classic on-line/OTB blunder on my second night.  I pushed a pawn to the eighth rank.  I can't say I queened it; I didn't.  I just sat there waiting for a prompt before clicking on the Q.

After a bit my opponent replaced it with a queen and I realised what I'd done.

Believe it or not as you like, but it really happened.

I felt like an idiot!

Definately over the board! In tournament games I get nervous and excited. I am also more alert.

I can think better on a board than on the computer...So OTB is better

When I play OTB and find myself in a dificult position, sometimes I like to get up and examine the board form different angles. Unless I turn my moniter on its side, can't really do that with internet chess...

Definatley play worse on computers I like to face my opponents and the weird colour thing for people moving stuff draws my eye to that area so I dont see the whole board as well or thats what I think anyway.
