Capturing the King

Hi guys,

It's brilliant how the computer on blitz and bullet can detect any illegal moves and keep the clock running until the player makes a legal move. However, what are the rules on tournaments with actual clocks? It really isn't practical to stop the clocks to tell your opponent that he just moved his king into check (for example).

I used to play blitz with a friend a long time ago, before the internet, with a chess clock. When this friend introduced me to blitz he told me that if you miss that ur king is in check and move something else, then your opponent can capture the king and you automatically loose. Have any of you heard of this?

What are the actual official rules?
