Carlsen Anand Game 2

This is very exciting. Two champions going head to head...

My question is about the move that ended the game

...34 h5

Was Rb8 the proper move?  that's what my stand alone computer tells me.  (I know, I know...but I love it!

Also:  Was there any reason to fight on after Qb7?  I recognize the elementary nature of my quesiton; I appreciate the patience required to answer...

h5 was a blunder. After Qb7!, it was game over, due to the massive material losses that would ensue if Anand kept playing.

The proper move was Qd2, preventing Qb7 by threatening a perpetual check.

This was the threat after Qb7 (lets pretend white gets to move again):

So Black to move had to play something like this to avoid mate (see if you can find a reasonable move hehe):

So really there was no reason to play on, even between very weak players.

Rb8 leads to a similar tactic that was available to white at different moments had black not been careful.

In the game, 34...Qd2 instead would have tied a defender to f2, and if white doesn't defend f2 there are ideas like perpetual check to draw.  In such a case if white goes for the win (i.e. avoids the perpetual) it's too dangerous and black suddenly becomes the one thinking about a win.

If white defends f2 with 35.Qxf3 he would have obviously been better, but I don't know if it would have been enough to win.

Sorry to Hijack your thread Peter. But could I ask anyone what the purpose of Anand's move 10 was. Bb6. The only reason I could see for it would be to stop White playing Na5 threatening c6 or to try and exchange the Bishop and Knight. Or am I missing something?

shell_knight

One commentator was saying 11...Na5 was possible and somewhat annoying so he was guessing 10...Bb6 would be played.  He said also possible is 10...Nf8 where black can either defend with 11...Bd7 or sac the pawn and go for kingside pressure.

shellknight:  thank you.

JammyM, no problem.  This is a good game to learn from.

adding to JammyM, how far "in book" did Anand take it?  Did he leave early??

So much analysis is over my head that I appreciate those who don't mind condescending towards the U1500 world of fans.

Hey, it's not my suggestion, it was the GM commentating.

But yeah, I thought that instantly won for white too.  But then there are some checks can black can cover g7 (or white has to allow a perpetual).

That was seriously deep man! Best description of game 2 in the WCC that I've seen on these forums as of now.

I've only just joined the forum. And to think I was worried some of the chess talk might be a bit abstract and beyond my grasp.
