Carlsen is less than 20 points away from immortality.

I see that there is at least one person on this site with a sense of what is really significant. Too bad there isn't a perfect number at reach (8128 might be impossible, even for Carlsen.)

2916 is a perfect square:)

That is when the aliens invade.

This is a preview to what might happen when he reaches it ....

Belief in Jesus automatically gives you 2900 rating.

How's YOUR rating??

Don't worry, vast distances, extremely low probability of intelligent life evolving, and special relativity will keep us safe.

A perfect number is much better than a perfect square.

I think computer will crash and FIDE's rating for Carlsen will be erased. Thus, he will have to compete with juniors all over again till he reaches 2900 once more.

Probably it would be easier if he just sandbagged all the way down to 496. Wink

I agree with the one comment hat ratings have become inflationary in nature.A Fischer rating of 2800 is equivalent to modern day 2900, which Fischer achieved without access to Houdini etc.

He's so dreamy *swooons*... no, but seriously. They should market that face. Good way to get more people interested in chess. :D

"which Fischer achieved without access to Houdini etc"

If the players around 1970 had access to Houdini it is possible that they had played better, but it would certainly not have affected their rating.

That's not even logical! If they play better than the rating will go up. The strength of computers today are A major part of the reason why ratings are so high. It gives the grandmaster a opponent to train with higher than their own level. Bobby Fischer had no one at his level in 1972 to really train with.

Elo rating doesn't mesure the absolute strength of the players, but their relative strength. When you are 200 points above your opponent, you are expected to have a 75% score against him (which means, winning 75 games out of 100 and losing the other 25, or winning half and drawing half). This is true no matter what your level is : for me, for you, for Carlsen. For this reason, computers don't change anything to the Elo ratings on average : the same players play, and their relative strength are unchanged.

I discussed this at length last month, right here: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/carlsen-and-the-quest-for-2900

You mean, the debate about prime numbers, square numbers, and perfect numbers ?
