Castleing

hi

I know all of the 5 castleing rules, but I want to know about how many points castleing is worth. I've played people who castled instead of geting his/her queen out of harms way. He yelled sacrifice in all caps and many '!' behind it. I've also played people that never castle. When I ask them why they didn't castle they said it wasted a move and he could achive the same protection while devloping his/her pieces.

just please tell me how many points you think castleing is worth.

Thanks!

Dont know what you mean by points. There are 4 but I say 5 elements of chess.    1.Material    2.force   3. Time or Tempo  4. Space  and 5. Pawn Structure. What counts is you use these to force your opponent into checkmate. Points are for football.

Some people wait til later to castle once they see which side would be most defensive.

I hear you but I am using "points" as an estimation

you've heard:

pawn = 1 point

knight = 3 points

bishop = 3 points

rook = 5 points

queen = 9 points

king = game

Castling can't be measured by "points". It all depends on the position and the importance of king safety. Also, think of it this way, in one way, it takes 3 moves to get the castled position with better king safety. Castling allows it to be done  in 1

If you can win material or checkmate your opponent without castling then it's not nessesary to do so and sometimes castling is a bad Idea if your opponent has the pieces on the right squares to destroy the pawn shield

Ivandh--is life, health and home insurance for wusses also?

Robman6

just like types of insurance--depends--doesnt make you a wuss

What if a woman castles--what name will Ivandh call her

Lot of ignorant know it alls here

As an "estimate" its worth an infiniti points if it helps your position and worth a minus infiniti if it dosent. If you have to ask the question again you dont get my point. Which is......  Even the point system itself dosent matter unless you can use it to win.  Or let me just be honest. I dont know how to answer your question because its kinda abstract. Castling is just a move like any other move. Dont worry about other peoples opinions and just do it if the situation, in your calculation, calls for it. I do think that most beginners especially should castle early because the defense your pawn wall gives. I always feel I have an advantage if my opponent isnt castled. More advanced players can not do it because they have a better evolved sense of when they absolutely should do it or not. Good luck and keep on castling man.......

Tomsimon-finally an objective, intelligent voice on this chat!!

What are the 5 castling rules?  I can only think of:

Castling can be done only if the king hasn't moved yet, and there are no pieces between the king & rook.

No castling through check

When castling, the king moves two spaces to the left or the right, and the rook goes one space next to the king opposite of where it started.

Can't think of any other rules

well it's obvious, but no castling and landing in check.

I almost forgot:

"not castling on Tuesdays in months with R's in them.
