I'd say don't trust engine in the opening. Only in middlegame.
Centaur Chess Challenge
What's really interesting about our game is how different our different engines are evaluating the position.
I asked him and he says his Houdini sees only a slight advantage for white while my Stockfish thinks it's already winning.
I wonder if Stockfish is just overestimating its abilities or if the days of Houdini are numbered!
in general houdini gives a much lower evaluation then the other engines (stockfish Komodo ect) so it is no surprise that it doesn't think that there is much advantage
Game's over. Houdini's owner resigned. Stockfish was showing an advantage of >3 for himself.
True, but blunder was made with Rybka :)
Rybka is no match anymore for the big three (Houdini/Stockfish/Komodo). Why would you use such a thing? ^^
I can't tell which is stronger between houdini and stockfish
. In some positions houdini will find some brilliant line that stockfish completely misses, and I've found that the same can be true in reverse in different positions (I have both houdini 1.5 a x64 and houdini 4 x64, and stockfish 3). I personally like houdini more because I feel like stockfish overevaluates certain positions, but using both together is perhaps the best way to play centaur chess.
I have never used komodo, but from what I've heard it is just about as strong as houdini or stockfish, if not stronger.

Stockfish is the king at tactical chess, Houdini makes more sane positional evaluations, while Komodo shines at endgame play, where it's clearly superior to all the competition. But we are not talking about huge differences here- they are mostly felt in short time controls, while in the regular long time controls of Correspondence Chess the choice is rather a matter of taste. I prefer Komodo, but I would be almost equally happy with any of that triplette. My only concern is Houdini's endgame play, which is really poor- mr. Houdart should improve that if he wants to stay competitive.
Most top centaur players use two, or even three engines running in parallel, and this greatly lessens the chance of a superior line being pruned due to faulty engine programming. I have an official 2400+ Correspondence rating, but my weak hardware does not allow running more than one engine at a time.
So does mine. If I use Houdini I can't do anything else. Internet pages don't (re)load until I close it.
That's why I prefer using Rybka for analysis of finished games.
[...] and stockfish 3 [...]
Um, Stockfish 3 is kinda outdated aswell. There's Stockfish DD (kinda like Stockfish 4.1) and you could always get the latest development-version, which should be even stronger.
I updated during the Centaur-Game to the newest Stockfish Dev-Version several times.
@Pfren: Since you probably really are a good Centaur-Player, I'd like to play against you, to see if the human actually matters in Centaur-Chess (which is why I played MSC157 in the first place and considering the result am not too convinced about ^^).
There was only 1 time where I did not follow the engines 1st suggestion. And that was when the 2nd to 4th had the exact same evaluation in multi-PV so I picked the one that looked more logical. (I think the options where something like Ra2, Rab1, Rfb1, Rfe1)

I don't mind you analyzing this ongoing game since a mere human won't be able to tell something that Stockfish hasn't already figured out!
Btw: putting the Queen back to where it was in the beginning, according to Stockfish is considered the 2nd best option for black right now!
