I don't think checkers is a version of chess, because checkers came first. By a lot. The two games were created independently during much different times and places. I think a better way of saying it is chess is a more complicated, intricate, version of checkers.

They ARE totally different games. Created at different times, by different people, for different reasons. But since checkers came first, and chess is so much more complex, a good way of thinking about it is chess is just a more complicated and intricate version of checkers.

Since they currently use the same board, with the starting pieces arranged in a somewhat similar pattern, with some similar moves, most people are going to think they are similar anyway.

They are not similar. I play both. Require totally different thinking.

I use the Chess board not the Checker board in the style ( you can change yours in settings).

Chess actually wins If they make a queen, And also just kind of the win with Just there, a Ponds

If you play 8x8 it is the same board. Checkers does have 10x10 and 12x12 variants
