thank you, this thread answered my question. i wanted to play some 960 live but it doesn't exist.
i want to play a type of chess match where one team starts with 4 bishops and the other with 4 Knights
When I click on the link to play chess960 it takes me to the same online chess page where I play normal (non fisher style) page...what am I missing? How to a challenge or accept a challenge in 960 mode?

They have been saying it would be added for a long time now. They have also said there are other priorities. So dont hold your breath. There is another site where you can already play 960 for free, but it doesnt have quite as many people (not sure I'm allowed to say or link to it, but if you have investigated the free places to play chess you should know it.)

I've been asking on and off about 960 for maybe 3 years now. I was told that it was on the "to do" list. They've been obviously working behind the scenes on a lot of stuff but I haven't seen anything like the new live interface or dramatic ipad apps in quite a while so I do wonder what they're up to...
Why doesn't this exist. I think if anything, chess 960 live would be a ton of fun playing live rather than with 1 day per move, because there's so many possibilities to explore, and it would be fun to be able to explore them kind of quickly and then just move on.
Also, why not other chess variants?
I wish someone would create code and a website where you can make up your very own chess type of games, where you specify different pieces, and where they can move, and even change the shape of the board.
Ok. So it would be fun, maybe that idea would never work.
But at least 960 on live would be nice. (I'm pretty sure you cannot currently do that, if I am wrong let me know).
