Chess a real sport?????

How masculine a sport is chess? I got picked on at school a lot because i wouldn't do more 'masculine sports' like cricket and handball, so I stopped playing for a while. I'm a Christian and I'm straight by the way.

Chess is a "real sport" in my opinion. Your adreneline kicks in, you sweat, your physical condition affects your play, you can become fatigued, it has rules and regulations, national and international federations, and you can become a professional at it like in many other sports.

Scottrf

Na it's not really a real spot, more of a game.

Your examples of masculine sports aren't particularly masculine either though.

dfazak

As a devoted chess player my self it pains me to say this, but no it is not. But take heart in the fact that you are not alone and chess is a very popular activity carried out by many people all over the world, so keep you're chin up and keep doin what you love. CHESS NERDS UNITE!!!

Vivinski

Chess is a sport, recognized by the IOC, just not a physical one.

Like snooker, petanque, curling, etc.

I'm an atheist and straight btw

Scottrf

A sport by almost any definition is a physical activity, which chess isn't.

Vivinski

I disagree, and have wiki on my side :p

Scottrf

Wiki isn't on your side because it says that sport is a physical activity. It simply states that the IOC recognises them as sports.

Where's TheGrobe with his Ven diagram.  He'll set ya'll straight--if you aren't already.

Definition

The precise definition of what separates a sport from other leisure activities varies between sources, with no universally agreed definition. The closest to an international agreement on a definition is provided by SportAccord, which is the association for all the largest international sports federations (including association football, athletics, cycling, tennis, equestrian sports and more), and is therefore the de facto representative of international sport.

SportAccord uses the following criteria, determining that a sport should:[1]

  • have an element of competition
  • be in no way harmful to any living creature
  • not rely on equipment provided by a single supplier (excluding proprietary games such as arena football)
  • not rely on any 'luck' element specifically designed in to the sport

They also recognise that sport can be primarily physical (such as rugby or athletics), primarily mind (such as chess or go), predominantly motorised (such as Formula 1 or powerboating), primarily co-ordination (such as billiard sports) or primarily animal supported (such as equestrian sport).[1]

There has been an increase in the application of the term 'sport' to a wider set of non-physical challenges such as electronic sports, especially due to the large scale of participation and organised competition, but these are not widely recognised by mainstream sports organisations.

Scottrf

Basically any job fits those criteria.

Haha, it certainly would seem that way at first glance. But, I think I know where he's coming from.

See, with true Christian beliefs, there can be a misunderstanding by those who don't understand the single Christian man's convictions.

For example, if he doesn't take part in locker room jokes about the broad he banged last night, then there is peer pressure to either fornicate or risk being thought of as homosexual.

Some people can't just understand how a heterosexual man can abstain from sex outside of marriage, so in an effort to wrap their brains around how he can exercise such self-control, they rush to the judgement that he must be gay.

The truth is, he's every bit as heterosexual as the male whore who slays more putang on the daily than Carlsen has rating points...he, aided by the supernatural help of the Holy Spirit, just chooses to be strong in his conviction to wait for marriage with that special (not retarded) woman meant to be his.

Cliffs:

Chess is a real man's sport.

Your brain is a physical part of your body which is used during chess. Thats all I got to further add in regard to chess being a sport. Innocent
