Chess a real sport?????

I've heard a lot of discussion about whether chess is an art, a game or a science. It's all three. There is art to the carving, and appearance of the chess pieces themselves, or in the appearance of a particular position. It is, of course, a game, and the computer reduces it to calculation and math/science. But sport? I think not.

It's definitely not just a game.

A sport by almost any definition is a physical activity, which chess isn't.

You know how tireing it is to move those pieces?

And OTB is even worse!

It gets very tiring trying to bring my horse to water.

i think it is a sport because you can have a game plan, you an study it, it has rules, they hold tournaments for it, local, national, and internationals, they give out titles, and isn't any other sport considered a game ex. football, basketball, baseball?

Yes, yes, we're all straight Christians now...or something. Except for that bisexual guy...or was he a girl? I can't remember. Nevermind.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Haha, it certainly would seem that way at first glance. But, I think I know where he's coming from.

See, with True Christian beliefs, there can be a misunderstanding by those who don't understand the single Christian man's Convictions.

For example, if he doesn't take part in locker room jokes about the broad he banged last night, then there is peer pressure to either Fornicate or risk being thought of as Homosexual.

Some people can't just understand how a Heterosexual man can abstain from Sex outside of Marriage, so in an effort to wrap their brains around how he can exercise such self-control, they rush to the Judgement that he must be Gay.

The Truth is, he's every bit as Heterosexual as the Male Whore who slays more Putang on the daily than Carlsen has Rating Points...he, aided by the Supernatural help of the Holy Spirit, just chooses to be Strong in his Conviction to Wait for Marriage with that Special (Not Retarded) Woman Meant To Be His.

Fixed for Correct Christian Capitalization.

There was this great quote for a different questionable sport I found on a youtube video but I can't find it now.

Something about, it may not be weightlifting but it's a group of people who apply themselves to get better at a skill and seriously compete against eachother for the love of the game and competition and so how can you not call it a sport or something something.

Anyway it sounds very convincing and reasonable... instead of pulling out our dictionaries instead of talking about the actual meaning.

Wafflemaster, your point may be made with some, but, as we've seen with this same thread numerous times, many will be biased, especially here, on a chess site.

How masculine a sport is chess? I got picked on at school a lot because i wouldn't do more 'masculine sports' like cricket and handball, so I stopped playing for a while. I'm a Christian and I'm straight by the way.

So what? What do these facts have to do with your question?

As far as how masculine a sport chess is, maybe you should ask GM Susan Polgar http://www.susanpolgar.com/susan-polgar-achievements.html

The people who picked on you are probably sub-human troglodytes, so what difference do their opinions and/or actions make? If you like doing something that isn't harmful to others or yourself (ie like smoking, drinking, substance abuse etc) you should do it regardless of what the troglodytes "think" and regardless of your own religious beliefs and sexual orientation.

3.
diversion; recreation; pleasant pastime.

Obviously not a strong enough definition, otherwise browsing the internet could be considered a sport.
CalamityChristie
