Study books, play others that are better than yourself (it improves your game).  Control the center, look for a move then find a better move, learn pins, forks, develop your pawns, use the taticts trainer, plan several moves ahead, be patient. Never underestimate your opponent's pawn sitting and not moving, it is easy to forget their part in the game, because they are so powerless, but at just the right time have a deciding factor in winning, sometimes in checkmate sometimes in converting to a queen.
