Let's face it. Travelling to colonize other planets and moons takes a long time.  Chess is a great way of killing time.  Would you advise NASA or any other space agency or company to train all their astronauts to play chess as a way to stave off boredom in space?

If you teach them to play blindfold, it will even save mass. And mass is velocity. And velocity is time.

They played chess with HAL 9000 in 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Living in the present is the best way to travel through time. People like me want the future right now, but all we see is the past.

Too many people are conditioned to like chess because of each other, rather because they geniuenly like it.

This topic will not matter for another 200 years likely.

I always play chess on my space exploration missions in USS Voyager. See my avatar.

Nah, i'd add "Asteroids" to their computer program. That way, they'll have fun and get practice at remove obstacles along the way.
