anyone reccommend chessbooks that are good for studying opening play?

There are dozens of good opening books, but we can't recommend the best one unless you provide your rating (and optionally your style, what you've already studied, and what you expect to achieve from studying this book).

Assuming you are a beginner, 10 opening rules is probably enough, but if you really want a book now then you can't go wrong with "Improve Your Opening Play" (modern, shorter) or "Ideas Behind the Chess Openings" (classic, longer).

There are probably thousands- the new MCO-15 is now available. I have Yasser Seirawan's series with 'Winning Chess Openings' (very good)- also John Watson's two volume set 'Mastering the Chess Openings'. Bruce Pandolphini has a two volume set 'Chess Openings: Traps and Zaps', those are just a few ideas- good Luck
