I have been checking the career percentages of the world chess champions and those who came very close, but didnt make it. My most interesting findings so far is that only 4 of the great chess players scored over 70% : Alekhine-72.9 , Fischer-72.6, Capablanca-72.2 and Keres-70.2 ! Kasparov has 69.4% and Topalov is the lowest at 57.4% ! Korchnoi, Bronstein,Rubinstein and Fine all have over 61% which makes one wonder about Topalov.

What about Khalifman and Kasimdhazinov?Topalov is not a very regular player, he is capable of the best and worst

Khalifman had a little over 58% and Khasim is over 62%, both higher than Top.

Is that win percentage? what about draws? I've heard Salo Flohr had one of the highest drawing percentages of all time.

Also, its interesting that Karpov has 65% while both Anand and Kramnik have 62.8%

I don t have deep knowledge on chess history, but times were different.Nowadays many more games are disputed by a high competition player, so it s very hard to maintain a high perfomance along the season. In the past there were few competitions compared to nowadays

Regardless, I believe a world champion level player should score over 60% and those over 70% are clearly in a class of their own.......even above most champions. This elite group includes Keres !

Flohr weighs in with 60,7% with: +315 -129 =427 ! Another "drawing master" Carl Schlechter weighs in at 61.5% : +295 -116 =370

Who has the lowest percent of losses?

I heard Capa went 10 yrs without a loss at one point!?

edit: or maybe that was just with white?

Good question......havent calculated that but at a glance it looks like that would be between Capablanca, or Petrosian

Fischer and Capablanca are the only world champions who lost fewer than 100 games in their careers.

but you would have to put an asterisk on Fischer for that category, no other World Champion stepped out of the position without any chess games being played to defend his title.  The "rematch" 20 years later, with Spassky cannot be categorized as a true 'rematch' when both players were still in their prime or even close to it.

Capablanca defended his title in the 'normal' style at the time.  As did all other World Champions.

I dont know how this is relevant at all to the fact that both champions lost fewer than 100 games in their careers?
