Chess.com can and should do something about abandonments

Again that's wrong and very hypocritical to say, how do you know what the person whos disconnected is going through? Stop being a hypocrite and understand people have issues beyond just "I'm losing the game I'll just disconnect", hence why trying to force chess.com to create heavier sanctions than already given to abandoners is just wrong.

But....They are making ME wait...I might lose precious online rating points...EVEYRYONE should bow to my whims!!!...EVERYONE disconnects, or walks away except ME.  Im the only person that ever has internet issues.  That should sum it up.

Allahisthegreatest

sometimes abandonment happens due to disconnection

Ok, let's assume that you've started a 1 min game against someone. You are playing black and just before your opponent makes his/her first move, someone knocks at the door and unfortunately, there's nobody else in your house. What will you do? Will you make your guest wait for you until you finish your game? When you come back it shows that the game has been abandoned as you haven't made the first move. So, does that mean you were unfair to your opponent?

your just making the point and probably most ppl who are trying to argue about big deal just wait...are talking about one minute. thanks for clarifying.

free wins? he outplayed his opponent for the last 15 minutes now its m8 in 1 or 2. so he needs to get punished for playing longer time controls and winning? thats your argument? than on another thread tell us that we should really play longer time controls.... We're trying to help ppl here and make chess.com a better place. and again my suggestion for chess.com on longer time controls there should be an option while you create your game that if your opponent didn't move for 3 minutes you should have a right to claim victory. and to redgirl and others here you can play your games without that option so your opponent can punish you. cheers.

yes it happens and you lose on time or so. I still prefer not to wait more than 3 minutes for a move of my opponent and ready to lose points when it happens to me.

IMKeto

The obesession over online rating points makes no sense to me.

Even worse is this mentality of "I cant wait"

First of all, why do you think people play 30 mins games? Because they need some time for thinking. And you are saying that they shouldn't be allowed to think. Then there's no use in having 30 mins games. Secondly, the opponent is not really punishing you. If it's mate in 1 or 2 and your opponent is not making a move, then start playing a new game. Why are you waiting for him?

oh so here goes the argument. you outplayed your opponent for 15 minutes but now he left the site to screw you. so your saying don't be obsessed with online rating points. you don't wanna wait another 15 minutes so you win the game on time. no big deal rating points just resign and move on to the next game. hmmm a winning argument made your case thx. and redgirl it doesn't happen much maybe. when I used to play 30 minutes it did happen even now when I play 10 it happens here and there but I don't care much cuz its shorter time control. btw @fish saw you sayin that you play only older ppl so this stuff doesn't happen....

By your own admission, you say you "cant" wait.

10 minutes is an eternity. but i bet you have no problem staring at a cell phone all day.

And you obviously have the patience to contstantly whine about lfe struggles like having to "wait" 10 minutes.  Next time it happens, pick up your cell phone and stare at it.  Time will fly right by.

As for your comment about only playing older people?  The only place this impatient "I cant wait..." crap happens is online.  You dont see it in OTB tournaments, and in the rare case it does happen, you dont see those kids around for very long.

you still have to play that moves you can't just walk away. I think 3 minutes is enough for 1 move when most ppl are playing entire game in this time control. hey it was a suggestion. chess.com should have both options for ppl like you that wants to think for 5 minutes 1 move etc of course that thinking usually and suddenly only happens when they see they're losing.

I think you don't know that we could play multiple games at a time.

He cant stay focused on 1 game, and you want him to play more than 1 game at a time?

tipish

again not on the app.

tipish

Can't stay focused? you mean to watch the clock running out? oh

tipish

so basically your talking about 1 minute games you can play another in same time... etc. as I said b4 your just making the point.

That's what you should be asking. Instead, you are asking chess.com to punish people who take some time to make their moves.

nope. that wasn't my suggestion. sorry.

JB0691

No, no, no.

Disconnectors must be punished.  On other sites (which I won't name), an escape or disconnect counts as a forfeit.  What happens after a forfeit is at issue.  In OTB games, forfeits do not adjust rating points but count toward tournament points.  Chess.com, if they do not do so already, should treat this likewise.
