Best resignation I faced over the board was in 1977 when smoking was allowed in public, I was playing Lou Prescott a pipe smoker. I was 3 moves from checkmate and Lou Prescott resigned by picking up his king and dropping it in the Ashtray!??

I once drew a game OTB where I was completely winning (+11 advantage, mutual draw) and I was so ashamed of myself when I came back and analysed with an engine.

A long time ago, when I was a complete beginner, my coach didn't let us play Scholars Mate in any of our games, so any time my opponent tried to Scholars Mate me I ignored it because I knew they weren't allowed to do it.
He hosted a tournament, but the rules were different - Scholars Mate WAS permitted. I didn't know that. So I lost to Scholars Mate. Twice. In one five-round tournament.
