Chess Correlations

Chess is often falsely equivocated with intelligence. Why is this? Is there a reason why either people who play chess are perceived as more intelligent or more intelligent people are perceived as playing chess more? I have read several studies which have suggested that there is no correlation between chess skill and intelligence past the beginner level. Are there any studies which disagree with this statement? Does anyone believe that chess actually correlates with intelligence?

You make an interesting point, but the point is dubious. Do people really think that chess masters don't study chess? I have a hard time believing that.

It would be interesting to do a study and determine the average rating of those who think chess skill is connected to intelligence and those who don't .  Wink

Well, I cannot provide experience because almost all of the chess I play is online. Also, I disagree that there is chance in chess. If your opponent makes a move that happens to be better than he could have ever calculated, that is not chance. He or she still used experience to find that move.
