Chess engine as Christmas gift?

Hi,
I know nothing about chess but I'm looking to buy my boyfriend a chess engine(?). He basically has talked about a program which you can enter all the piece positions, then the program will tell you which side has the advantage, which moves to do next, etc. I've looked up some products (Fritz 13 and Houdini 3), and they seem to be a little more advanced than what I'm looking for. Are there any other products that could do the above functions? He's not an amateur or anything, but he also isn't very computer-savvy, so I don't want to buy him an overcomplicated program which he will never be able to figure out.
