Chess Gems

Has anyone read Chess Gems? It sounds so historically beautiful. But is it too hard for a 1400 player? (my wonderful 1500 rating took a nose dive because I was playing entirely too many games.).
I am doing lots of tactics study now and hope Chess Gems will be right for me. Do you think a 1400 player could get a lot out of it?
