I read this sentiment in an article somewhere, but I think it is only partly correct. Magnus Carlsen is very popular and of interest to even non-chess players, but I don't think that any individual's popularity can lead chess into the Olympics. I do believe that Magnus can draw broader worldwide sponsorship to chess, but before that can happen, I beieve that FIDE must be reformed and made more efficient.
Chess.. in olympics!

I would love to see chess in the Olympics- I would definitely watch that! Maybe there should be an olympics for intellectual sports- chess, go, competitive math, competitive science fairs, etc.

one major problem chess is not a sport----------its a great game.
On one hand I agree with this, but on the other I do not think syncronised swimming or table tennis should be in either. If syncronised swimming is a sport then surely chess must be lol.

If curling is a sport, then I don't know what isn't.

Most would agree that chess is not a sport. But the WCBO (World Chess Boxing Organization) has turned it into one. I have heard that they are lobbying to the International Olympic Commitee to include Chessboxing as an Olympic event within the next decade.

Even if Chess gets into the Olympics at some time in the future...I believe it will be very short lived due to lack of interest. Selling Tickets is the objective...and chess does not have enough of a fan base.

Both of the activities you described require demanding and very precise physical activity. Which is completely absent in chess.

Those activivities have physical action to them-I never hear poker players call poker a sport. There is nothing wrong with chess being called a game, that does not take anythign away from chess.

Chess is a cerebral sport! Most countries ,including India, have recognized it as a sport.I think Chess was included as a demonstration sport in one previous Olympics!

I have one thing to say chess is indeed a sport. It has more adrenalin than rugby .makes people more furious than a missed goal attempt or an own goal in soccer.takes more stress to the body than any other sport since going into any match you have to be mentaly and phisically ready for war .no my friends chess should long time have been part of the olympics.i bet its only those who do not understand the sport that canvas against its inclusion. Therefore let us Educate to liberate our loved sport.ITS NoT JuST a GAMe .This is WAR.

I'm sorry, but all this is just factually incorrect.

I think FIDE will dislike getting involved in Olympics..! But Chess in Olympics will give the necessary push to this great sport!

I don't think FIDE would dislike that, since COI is corrupted too and they probably would find new opportunities to make business. But I'm not sure the COI would like to be associated to aliens.

If they do decide to have chess in the olympics I then would suggest every country send in a 7 player team to compete for olympic medals. The medals should be awarded to teams 1st 2nd and 3rd with Gold to 1st silver to 2nd and bronze to 3rd place finishers . To Qualify it would be the same format as a knock out tournament .That way we won't have ambiguity with organising who plays who because there would be a draw by the olympic commitee that is in charge of Hosting the olympics for that time. What do you think.Names of participant in a random draw.
The victory of Magnus Carlsen may pave the way for the likelihood of Chess becoming an Olympic sport! Also he has the potential to bring in more sponsors!
