religious: adj, scrupulously and conscientiously faithful

I think that's the definition of "religious" that OP is using. He's saying that people who play chess are "scrupulously and conscientiously faithful" to the game.

That's like saying something in the Milky Way galaxy could use improvement.  Maybe you want to narrow it down a bit.  Of course, if you do, leave room for our Solar system.
