Chess master Robert Snyder

Has anybody ever heard of him? I just saw him on America's most wanted. He's a chess author, and teacher who molests young boys.

Blackadder

If I remember correctly, I think Will Smith once got a chess lesson off him for a birthday present. There are pictures someone.

....And that concludes everything I know about Snyder

Do you really want to know what Snyder has been doing lately?

Long story short: he's fled the country.

TeslasLightning

Ah, he got caught though, he had fled to Belize, where he started teaching chess to young boys again:

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A convicted sex offender who moved to Belize when he was supposed to be serving probation in Colorado has been returned to Fort Collins to face charges.

Fifty-five-year-old Robert Michael Snyder, a youth chess teacher who wrote books about the game, was convicted in 2007 of sexual assault on a child and unlawful sexual contact. Authorities say the victims were his students.

He was ordered to serve supervised probation after his release from prison in 2008, but authorities say he moved to Belize and was teaching chess.

Snyder was arrested Dec. 4 after he was featured on "America's Most Wanted." He was transported to the Larimer County Jail this week.

He's being held on charges of failing to register as a sex offender and violating probation.

Hopefully, they'll be wise enough to leave his arse in jail this time.

I wonder how Bloodgood would have done in an open pool competition.

Conflagration_Planet

Do you think he's innocent?

TeslasLightning

He pleaded guilty.

Conflagration_Planet

I don't see what training 36 national chess champions has to do with. It certainly doesn't prove he's innocent!

Conflagration_Planet

Child molesters often are very likable, and sociable. Helps them get victims.

I have one of his books.  When I started going over the games, he seemed really arrogant and I stopped reading the book.  After I heard about his crimes, I thought about burning that book.  But, it sits on the shelf of books right where I left it last.  I hate burning books...but, now it seems wrong to think that my buying that book supported him.

It certainly wouldn't do any harm to that idiot to burn it. Maybe it had something useful in it anyway.

I wonder if this will affect the popularity of the Snyder Sicilian variation...

Please explain for "English-is-not-my-mother-language" readers !

Has it something to do with the adjective "snide" ?

In the Netherlands it is a normal Durch family name, Snijder/Snyder !

Yes.

Coach-Bill

I was acquainted with him back in the 1970's and 1980's. He was accused of molestation back then, but the case never went to court as the victim wouldn't testify. A few chess personalities spoke out against him and were promptly sued for slander. They settled out of court. When he got charged again in Colorado, it didn't surprise me in the least.

Conflagration_Planet

Me neither.
