You manage to threaten exactly the same thing by simply playing 9...Nxd4. Just because your opponent played 10.d5?? doesn't mean you didn't make a mistake. Even if you were winning anyway, having a much better move probably means around 40% of the advantage you had.
You can't justify allowing checkmate in one move when your opponent subsequently allows checkmate in a move. That's the logic you need to understand because a bad move will always be a bad move.
