Chess rating system
SmyslovFan, sounds like a reasonable explanation. I checked my former opponents, they raised as well. I know there's a lot of bad feelings about ratings, but anyhow you turn it, they will not disappear. Personly it's a motivation factor to improve, not to reach other players level. And if that's what makes me going, I don't see anything bad about it

Sorry I'm posting here I don't see how to open a new post ..
I'm new here, do we have collaborative games here?
A group of people playing together against AI or nother group of people?

Is online fide rating which is official worth will it be given any prominence in fide rated tournaments and such other tourneys.

Is anyone else bothered by the "Pawn Sacrifice" publicity using capital (or is it capitol) letters for the notation of files and dashes (B-F7) in the notation. And the strange arrows are befuddling. And the upper case X for captures (R-XF7) is jarring. Perhaps it is a blend of descriptive and algebraic to unsettle our perceptions of chess. Couldn't they have gotten a reasonably accomplished USCF rated player to help them out.

Yes, they call it vote chess. You can join a group and participate. Not all groups have vote chess matches, so look around.
I have a question.. Say you are a 1000 to1100 rated player..DO you think this player could go to 1500 to 1700? Or is it a mattter of IQ? Do you think some 1000 players could never reach like 1500?
Pretty sure IQ has no relevance in one's competence at chess (except at the highest level maybe, but this is speculative).
It's reasonable to assume that if one's ability to learn is not impaired by mental retardation (which would be the only way in which IQ could limit one's ability), then one can easily improve from a theoretical 0 (which is where everyone starts since no one's born knowing chess) up to 1800 and beyond. Children learn faster than older folks, but it's feasible to anyone.
It's something one learns over time. It's a bit of a complex skillset so it mainly depends on the amount of effort you're willing to invest.
Chess isn't intrinsically difficult... Once one has a grip on basic patterns it's simple. Everything else is cumulative. It's just a lot to practice, learn and assimilate.

Well said!
Wheelspawn a few days ago was complaining that at 1100 he could beat 1300s easily. Trust me, if you play 20 games you'll have a legitimate rating provided you play them 'the same way'. Meaning not with kids screaming for attention, not with the Misses complaining about something, and not while watching your favorite TV show at the same time. My rating dips when I have life aggro causing me to resign otherwise winable games every 3rd or 4th game. Or if I play too tired. BUt when I'm mindful of the enviornment when I play I can hit 1100 sometimes. Now, if I could just keep that concentration to stay 1100+ I could be 'great'. *grin* I love chess.
The rating system's math is rock solid. Both Elo and Glicko are both solid predictors of success or failure. I have to pick and scratch to keep my rating over 1100 and I DEFINITELY see a correlation between blunders/game and the rating.
