Chess rating system

I have played over 15,000 blitz games.  I don't believe my chess rating should change 200 points over a period of time, but it does.  I seem to go on streaks of winning for 2 months and my rating goes up, easily beating players 1200 to 1300.  Then I go on streaks of losing, losing to players 1100 to 1200 (and they beat me quite easily).  There seems to be a dramatic inconsistency in all of this.  Anybody else experience any of this?

Why dont you believe the rating should change 200 points? If you go on a streak of winning or losing, that seems like a perfectly  normal thing to happen. If the rating changed a thousand or so, then that might seem drastic, but only 200 seems pretty normal to me. I've lost many games to lower rated players, and so I expected my rating to drop. Instead of losing to low rated good players, and winning against higher rated poor players, you could just play people the same rating as you, and win/lose the same amount of games. Then your rating would not fluctuate as much.

This looks like the right place for me to whine a little bit about people who lose the game on time because they are about to be mated in two.  I get less points (whine).  Does this happen often?

You don't get less points. Beforehand you get a set amount of points if you win, draw or lose (established when the game starts).

I agree!

turtle, the general points system followed is as follows:

pawn - 1pt.

knight/bishop - 3pts.

rook - 5pts.

queen - 10pts.

of course points are not everything... the position of your piece also matters.. for example you might not mind losing a bishop or rook to save a pawn on the 7th row.. and points dont have any bearing on the game result.. it is just a basic framework to help beginners understand the value of different pieces

Queen is 9 points

Barry_Helafonte2

ratings are a measure of strength

halkiok

My first cooment on the fourms. A queen is worth 9 points (viswanathan said it was worth 10.)

Why I started with 800?

levar8

I did too. It will bounce around at first though.

When you created your account you are asked your skill level. Each skill level is assigned a different initial rating.

levar8

No, actually @Martin_Stahl. On the app it just gave me an 800 rating without asking. About a year ago I made an account on my computer and it asked my skill level.

It seems like 900 is around 40th percentile.
Can I assume 1000 is 50th
1100 60th
What's the rating for an 90th percentile player?
chessuppes

So am I below, at or above average?

My Blitz rating is exactly 1000 (which is 53.7%)

My Rapid rating is 1138 (which is 59.5%)

My Glicko RD is much lower in Blitz because that is what I mostly play.

So if 1200 is "average" then I am below average but my percentile is above 50%.

Thoughts?

levar8

Nah, sounds like you're above average for chess.com.

SmyslovFan

The average correspondence rating here is 1237, the average blitz rating is 1063.

Ratings don't matter

Are ratings a measure of strength, or of how one rates against the current roster of players?

It used to be the latter, but lots think today it is the former.

Is how the engine measures it the norm these days?

Neil_03

can I ask when I play some games I have a 500 ish rating and then other games I have a 1200 ish rating.. does the rating depend on the type of game ur playing. like do u have different ratings to different games???
