Actually, you did. It's 1200 and can be seen by hovering over your name.

turtle, the general points system followed is as follows:

pawn - 1pt.

knight/bishop - 3pts.

rook - 5pts.

queen - 10pts.

of course points are not everything... the position of your piece also matters.. for example you might not mind losing a bishop or rook to save a pawn on the 7th row.. and points dont have any bearing on the game result.. it is just a basic framework to help beginners understand the value of different pieces

queen is worth 9 not 10

It does depend on whom you ask, Max Euwe, for example, considered the queen to be worth ten.

I like the queen being equivalent to two rooks (2x5=10), but I am not really expirienced enough to have an opinion on this.

Cystem_Phailure

When I'm evaluating potential exchanges and lines I use GM Larry Kaufman's piece value system:

  • Knights and Bishops equivalent to 3.25 pawns
  • Rooks = 5 pawns
  • Queen = 9.75 pawns
  • having the Bishop pair adds a bonus 0.5 pawns

Kaufman is a mathematics professor and one of the developers of Rybka, and for versions 2.3 to 3 he was the primary person responsible for Rybka's evaluation function.

Here's a great article by Kaufman called The Evaluation of Material Imbalances (Chess Life, March 1999), in which he discusses the statistical value of lone Bishop vs. lone Knight, the importance of the Bishop Pair, and various exchange scenarios such as Queen vs. 3 minor pieces, Bishop or Knight vs. 3 pawns, two minor pieces vs. Rook and pawn, etc.

Cystem_Phailure

Oh yeah, if you really want to get into it, Kaufman adds the following:

A further refinement would be to raise the knight's value by 1/16 and lower the rook's value by 1/8 for each pawn above five of the side being valued, with the opposite adjustment for each pawn short of five.

He points out that this particualr refinement isn't very practical for general play but he thinks it should be included if one is developing computer evaluations. Cool

Sorry, so how do close is this system to an official ELO rating?

What do I tell women in bars?

Hey hon, i'm a chess player extrordinaire, and I have an ELO of ??????

I really need to convert Glicko to ELO to get lucky with them.

Any help?

nbcauthor

Look.  Have you never smoothed yourself over to a lush blonde, with beautiful eyes and an athletic figure and said,

"Hey Baby, how's things.  I've got an Elo of 1700...."

"OOO", she replies, "that sounds so masculine.  How about you tell me about your pawn endgames back at my place.  I really like to see how you reach the promotion square and promote your queen!"

And then you say, "Sorry love, got to practice my bishop and knight mating pattern.  Maybe another time."

At this point, she melts, and says, "Well, I do have a friend...."

Anyway, how equivalent is your rating here to your actual ELO?

Need this answer to enhance my love life.

I prefer longer games myself. I sometimes run out of time in blitz matches.

Hey Zootman107 and all,

I started playing chess a bit again over last Christmas (Dec 2010), doing the free Tactics Trainer problems on Chess.com, and the Tactics problems on ChessTempo.com. I don't have any other rating yet though. But I sure have a harder time with the timed Chess.com Tactics Trainer, where I'm under 1000 still. Is that supposed to be some kind of "rapid chess" rating? On CT, I got from 1200 to 1400 quickly, then it took me a couple months to get from 1400 to 1500, and now I'm around 1560 (Standard, 1469 Theory). Good fun; Cool

Not sure if its a meditation or an addiction :-)

Cheers-

Bill
