But we both were playing our first game... at the end of the game, mine went to 1200, his was still unrated. We are now playing another game, and his is still unrated. We didn't do anything different from each other that I can think of.

You two were playing a unrated game!! So no rise and fall there !!!

If it's the drawn game against Castleguard, the game was rated.

Apparently it appears there was no casltle and obviously no guard over there!!!

Morbaag

It was the drawn game against castleguard. And it was rated. And there was also not very much guarding, lol... but we both had our last piece be a castle (rook). :D

everyone starts at 1200. then as you play you get a new rating. it is all based on the Glicko ratings system :) check it out - it's a fun read!

This is like studying math.....I am just not able to understand the rating, how it works...

  1. 1200 is supposed to be the average rating in the elo rating system, so most chess playing websites start all players at 1200.

I thought it was 1500 lol.
u99566

ok

Morbaag

But why didn't he get 1200 then?

basically:

everyone starts out with a rating and a variable that determines how accurate your rating is. if you haven't played any games, then that variable is HUGE and allows your rating to swing more aggressively. but if you have played 1,000 games all very recently, then you have a low variable, so your rating will move more slowly. also, your opponent's variable matters. if they have a very loose variable, your rating will move less than if they have a tight variable.

:)

For anyone wondering, the huge variable when you haven't played much games is because they don't know how good you are yet.

Morbaag

I understand that... but why didn't Castleguard get any points after his first game?

checkmateibeatu

I don't know.

I dont know or any other signs of exclamation would not unfold the knot !! Now Morbaag may request his friend to register for a rated game and throw a challenge. Then start playing and then see the parameter of ratings!!

Morbaag

Already playin another game with him... we shall see what happens. :D
