I'm disappointed as a very weak player that I'm only finding much better players. There should be a zone where real beginners can play without ratings and all.

DrSpudnik

Given how bad most people are, maybe a one-tailed distribution may be more appropriate.

this formula of rating computation will help for those who are doubt for their ratings or probably for their own re cord purposes: ELO rating formula.

..........1......................

PlayerA Ea = 1 + 10 Rb - Ra

-------

100

............1..............

PlayerB Eb = 1 + 10 Ra - Rb

..............

100

Note: Ea + Eb = 1

I think rating is fun, and I look at my rating. Isn't that the way, you can see how you develope your game? I am struggeling getting back to my starting rate, but it's a challenge, specially when you only get 8-10 points for winning and sometimes even more minus for loosing Smile! I can see, that some players play in clubs as well. How good a player must you be to get a rating at about 1500? And what are the best ratings at Chess.com just about?

Good-KnightJoe

1500 rating is not that difficult since you will be playing against players that blunder pieces on a regular basis. I would start worrying at 1650 +

AlCzervik

I agree with Joe. I'm 1500 and I regularly miss what are probably easy tactics and I seem to give away pieces almost every game.

Yeah, easy for you to sayWink. I learned, that players at 1350 think a lot quicker and smarter than me. So 1650+ will never become an opponent to me, I believe. 1350 is quite a stabil player, or not??

Good-KnightJoe

Once you lose the fear of who are you playing with, you will realize that 1300-1400 players are all "tactics." You make your move, they react and for the most part they are easily defeated through a good solid opening. By using chess.tempo (or Explorer from chess.com) for the first 7-8 moves and by learning 1 or 2 good openings, you could really begin to climb up. I usually play the English for white and the Caro Khan for black. You could choose whatever you will comfortable with.

So far I have noticed that I'm the one who has the upper hand for the most part since I learned every trick of the book in these two openings.

You will also find out that once you learn a couple of good openings, by the time you get to the middle game, you will have a clear advantage. Not a guarantee to win, but it will give you a sense of freedom where little by little you will be begin to feel confident about your ability to win games.

It will take a little while but you will get there. Most of all, don't waste your mistakes and learn from them by not repeating them. Laughing

Thanks for the advice Laughing. I'll take a good look at your suggestions. Actually I allready discoveret, the importance of standing right through the game, so you don't lock yourself up

While joining to chess.com it will be unrated,

If we win our first game we get 180 something points

If we keep on winning will the rating for win increase?

That's funny. Because when I first came to chess.com, I had the opposite experience. I was getting what I considered very weak players (their skill didn't match what I expected from their ratings). ANd a lot of them had a very poor win/lose ratio (like .75/1)

But now that my RD has settled down, I am finding I usually get players with a winning record.

I think once you are off the RD roller-coaster, you will find more of your opponents are closer to your skill.

In the meantime, enjoy the lessons you learn playing against stronger players.

What you are experiencing is what I like to call the RD roller-coaster.

RD is a value used in determining your rating when you win/lose/draw a game. When you first begin, this number is subject to wide variances. During this time, you gain/lose points at a fast rate. It is not uncommon to get 100+ points if you beat someone with a higher rating and a solid RD. The idea is that if you are good, you will get to your actual rating quicker.

Over time, about 25 or 30 games, your RD will 'calm down' and you will find yourself getting/losing less than 20 points per game.

I saw someone else post that they were struggling to get back to their 'starting rating'. Don't fall into this trap. It is quite common to have an artifically high score at the beginning and it is this score that chess.com puts as your hightest score even though it was based on a wildly fluctuating RD.

Just wait it out. Your rating should begin to settle around 30 games then you will have a better idea of where you stand.

Right now, after about 36 Online Chess games, my score is 1558. I suspect my actual rating is 1450 - 1500 so I am enduring this very slow decrease in my rating until (hopefully) it finds a happy spot.

I have trouble undrstnasing what you ask, but generally if u want a national rating u have attend OTB tournament that in enforced by your local chess federation and to get internationl a rating u have attend a tournament that is accepted as FIDE tournament.

I'm just asking about this rating http://www.chess.com/livechess/players?name=&country=Georgia&min_rating=&max_rating=&type=Standard
